I have been doing alot of sitting with my leg up and watercolors have been a wonderful way to continue my artwork. I call it backwards thinking from oils. In painting with oil paint, you put your highlights on last. Not so with watercolor. You need to plan almost every move.
This piece is image size 14 1/2" x 7 1/2" on 300lb cold press watercolor paper by Fabriano. I will be matting it, maybe a double mat. It just brings the piece out so nicely. The finished size will be 20 x 13. If you would like me to frame it also I would be happy to do that just adding a bit extra for that.

PS, wanted to add the origianl has warmer tones. It's so difficult some times to get the correct color in photography. At least mine. :-) when I'm the photographer!

Some may already know this but a few months ago I did an amazing acrobat on my treadmill that has now shown itself again as a possible torn Meniscus. I have found it difficult to stand for periods of time and frustrated with not being able to create I started going back to watercolor for awhile til I find what's what. Tomorrow is the MRI reveal, so it will be surgery or sitting more til it heals.
This black Lab is watercolor with white acrylic highlights. Forgot to use that mastic!!
It's an ACEO trading card size, 3.5" x 2.5"on 140lb watercolor paper. It's #1 in the Series.
Larger pieces will soon be painted. Just getting my feet wet again. Feels like an old friend already!

A year ago almost to the day, we had plans to go to Heart of Texas Labrador Retriever Rescue's Night of Giving in San Antonio, Tx. Tickets in hand, rooms ready. I started to paint the Luke, The Fairmount Hotels Matre' D.
Roger became ill and had stents implanted so all trips were off. The half painted image was shown and the owner of the hotel bid and won. Well life takes hold and the poor painting was put aside. Do I do this often? No I do not. Not really good for business.
The origianl image was obviously the yellow Lab and the background was roughly painted in with reds, and greens. There was a large barrel behind the head which I had planned to use as the dark against light area. Those are the rules.
Well, next weekend is the 2nd Annual Hot Lab Rescue Night of Giving in San Antonio. I picked up the paiece and started. The feeling had changed and what flowed onto the canvas amazed me.
I started to paint Luke laying in that texas heat. Light to dark, I could do that with the limited color I chose. In yellow Labs I use oranges, yellows, golds, and pinks with violet shadows. I just continued with these colors in the background and when I was finished I knew why the year was needed. A whole new style had emerged and I caught Luke laying in the heat perfectly!
I actually love this oil painting. I think the Fairmount Hotel will be too!!!

This is a sleepy Chocolate Lab! Afternoons are such a great time to use for naptime.
I absolutely love how this painting came out. Alot of love in it. Our Fergus is the model but the position was so typical of Labs. Legs drapping, arms and huge paws just near the edge. I just purchased 10, 9 x12 masonite boards and found them to be so fun to paint on. When the paint was semi-dry I used a "no see" color glaze over the entire piece. I chose a Cadmium orange and light yellow mixture to add highlights all over the painting.
To explain "no-see" color, I take the mixture of oil paint and alot of painting medium. I use Gamblins Neo-Meglip. I barely touch the brush to the paint then brush it lightly all over the piece. Sometimes an artist will do an entire painting in glazes as the old Masters did. It gives such illumination to the painting with the underpainting shining through.
