I have been working feverishly on completing a painting to send to the Art Show At The Dog Show to se if I can be excepted this year. You can see my progression from top to bottom.

My point of completion is the Lab running so fast his legs would be somewhat blurred while his head and features clear and prominent. The image is due by January 11 so I need to keep myself tied to the easel!

LABRADOR RETRIEVER COLLAGE OUTDOOR ART BY SHEILA WEDEGIS

   It's what? Outdoor art??? Can also be indoor art too. I took a 22" x 22" x 2" piece of plywood, gessoed it and painted the Chocolate Lab swimming. I then took my painted papers and collaged the Lab and different areas of the water. Finishing up the painting process I used Fabric Gel and Golden Open acrylic paints to work the waters and spray. This week I will resin the front and back of the piece to seal and protect it from the elements.

When I slit out back, even though the scenery is beautiful, I still think some hanging art adds to the whole picture. The house has blank walls so it will be perfect to hang there.!

   Since this is a new venture for me I'm starting out with a lower price point then if it would be on canvas. Each painting will come ready to hang. Not only will I be creating Lab art on the Outdoor Art paintings but also landscapes and seascapes. I will also be taking orders with your ideas for your personal painting.

Sketch #3. On the 8" x10" painting I used ink,watercolor and colored pencil. I am having so much fun doing these. I'm planning a book on our new Pup Ozzie's shenanigans. He,like Fergus, loves running through our purple flowers, flattening them to the ground.

    Right after high school I begged my parents to let me go to art school. Being ADHD I had a difficult time at academic studies but was great as a visual learner. I wanted to illustrate books. So art school it was. It was a three year school and at the end I received a Certificate of Commercial Art.

    This piece is 12" x 12" watercolor and ink on 300lb watercolor paper. It's heading to be an illustration in a book I'm planning on our new Lab puppy Ozzie. Sammy and Ozzie play non stop so I have allot of reference material.

    I must have chatted with my friend Miriam Hughes 100 times today. She is also an artist and at times we bounce ideas off each other. On the last call she mentioned she was going to start doing small paintings for Christmas gifts and a light bulb went off. I have three 8" x 10" Arches watercolor panels. Hmm, and a bottle of gold ink I long forgot. So, draw with pencil? No, I always do that. Pen? No, it may smudge. Paint? All the time.
   We had Chinese food last night and on the table, the end chewed by Ozzie, was a chopstick. Hmmm. Hey, if I chisel the end and use that as a pen, that could be fun. So begins the first of at least three drawings in gold ink using a chopstick and laying in a quick wash.

   So I present #1. The ink blobbed in places, sometimes I had to resharpen the point or use the chewed end. It's an original!!! Maybe someone you know my like a small gift for Christmas.

"TUG O WAR"

It's been awhile. Loosing Fergus took the wind out of our sails, but his gift of Ozzie has given us new life and new images to paint. We just know Ozzie was hand picked by Fergus spirit. We see so much of him in Ozzie, of course, Ozzie's own sweet personality.
Right now we seem to be in the terrible two's. Ozzie is 4 months and has suddenly become very independent. He tries often to demand his way only to find himself in his crate only to fall sound asleep when he gets there. Who knew pups get over tired and cranky.

This painting is Golden Open Acrylic 6" x 9" RayMar acid free board. This tug o war games goes on every day between Sammy and Ozzie. The poor sheep toy was torn to bits. It's un-stuffed now and just a shadow of it's former self. hahaha.

     Since Fergus went to the Bridge I seem to be working with his face more than ever. I have always loved this image of him swimming, never leaving a ball behind.
      We are going today to visit his parents. His Mum is 15 years old and Dad is 13. Their human said Fergus looked just like his Mum. Not sure how I will be emotionally, but to touch that hair, see that face old, will be very special. So I'll have swollen eyes at the Sports Bah watching the Patriots,. haha, It will be so worth it.

   This piece is torn paper on the face and part of the water then I have used acrylic paint and Fabric gel medium along with it. I fell in love with this technique after taking a worksop with .Elizabeth St. Hilaire
but I needed to find my own voice rather than be a copy of hers. I think I may have accomplished this.

I have finally returned to the studio after loosing my studio assistant, Fergus. No paper towels went out the door today and no Lab hairs from a tail slapping the canvas got onto the painting.

Sammy and Sophie are still grieving their loss of their dear pack member.

Today's painting is from a photo I took of Sammy and Fergus at the dog park. They were always together. Playing or sleeping. They are Forever Friends!

Fergus

September 22,2000 - September 6,2011

What can we say. Excelled in agility, mighty defender and protector.He frightened many people who came to our door. A healer. No bruises or cuts went unlicked with great care. Once he learned to dive would be our Greg Louganis doing perfect into the pool. My beloved studio assistant usually leaving covered with paint and my shadow outside the studio. Sophie's little boy and Sammy's best friend. Telepathic. Obeying Sophie's orders to tell me when she wanted her dinner. When I was tired or sad he would lay his entire body along mine in bed to keep me safe. He loved our nightly game of keep a way in the pool but most of all he loved his best friend Roger as they walked nightly for 2 miles. Fergus is Roger's Heart dog.

Fergus passed yesterday with us by his side as he has been beside us for these short years. The diagnosis was a brain tumor. He had short remission as we did water exercises with him and brain stimulation by throwing the ball to him so he would catch it or chase it. Letting him figure out how to get out of the pool. One day we waited twenty minutes but he got it. Great cheers were heard!!

We had expected a miracle and we got it. Maybe not how we wanted, but we got to spend every moment with him. He showed me how to be calm and patient even when my back was in pain from getting him in and out or up or down. Once he shook himself I knew he was awake and he took off on his own. He was able to run after Sammy or follow Sam out the door at night to use the facilities. Needless to say, Sammy is grieving.

Brain tumors...silent till they are not but by then it's probably too late. The first sign was a limp that suddenly went to weakness and a paralysis. Remissions and recurrences. We chose to do Chinese Medicine rather than MRI's and surgery.

Before we went to the vets yesterday I did a print of Fergus paw on a canvas for Roger. As we drove to the office the sun caught his paw it it was glowing. I used Pthalo blue to do the print and I thought I washed it all off forgetting it's one of the strongest staining colors I could have used. They'll be no hide and seek games for Fergus on the other side of the Bridge. Sorry buddy, but I'll know when you are here for sure!!!

During our recent trip to the Scottish Highlands we visited Castle Mey, in Mey. The Castle was the summer home of the Queen Mum and now Charles visits during The summer months for a couple of weeks. After a fantastic tour we had the choice of going through the gardens or going to the animal area. Guess what I chose.!!
This is a watercolor of that back pasture with one of the Royal Angus Coos. Magnificent animals. I have it matted right now in a grey 16 x 20 mat and will be redoing it in the exact matting to make a better fit.

In Process...Horses of Scotland

I've been so busy doing commission work, not a bad thing, I got lost. Today I just knew I needed to paint just for me.

This is gessoed Masonite I think 12" x 9". I just grabbed and didn't even measure. Every day in Scotland we'd pass by the horses on our way to a new adventure. Of course we'd stop and once again I would take more photos. Just beauties! I'm doing it in Golden Open and heavy body acrylics.

    I just fell in love with the Scottish sheep that cover the Highlands. The babies surrounding the mums were just totally endearing to me.

Oh what a week we had in Scotland. The joke among us was that I chronicled every cow and sheep in the Country. I just felt they were so beautiful in the fields. Even driving I was hanging out the window with my camera.

Carolyne, along with Cathy Mathews runs this Rescue. Carolyne , pretty much on her own, with the help of fantastic fosters in her area. She re-homes Labs through Scotland. Recently we became sponsors for two Chocolate Labs that were mother and daughter and needed surgery and medical care. they were in terrible shape. Carolyne used her own money from her birthday to care for these sweet dogs.

My hope is to raise money to help these and others in Carolyne's care.

AFTER THE SWIMMING EVENT

It's a big event here when the weather and the pool are in synch. Fergus, our chocolate Lab , thinks he is Greg Louganis. He stretches out, paws forward, head bent just so and in he goes. A true beauty. This can go on for hours, til he is actually perspiring. Finally, he rests.

The Great Labraventure

We have been invited by Carolyne Linda Poulton to come to the Scottish Highlands. Recently I auctioned a painting to help their Lab Rescue. Labrador Retriever Rescue Scotland.

A few years ago we did the Great Alaskan Adventure, painting,blogs, photos of our trip with people receiving fun stuff. It was a great success. This time we are offering two different packages with a percentage of the package you choose going to the Rescue. When we arrive an American Gun Dog dinner will be done where we shall be the guests. Perfect timing.

I just started using Golden Open Acrylics. After years of using oils then moving into a smaller space, the fumes start to take their toll. I find I can use them just like my oil paints. It makes me very happy. I do have to wait at times for it to settle somewhat so I can continue to paint

This is a happy Lab. He noticed that sprinkler and needed to investigate. Perfect time to get a quick drink and a fun splash!

This is "There You Are". One of my favorite pieces, and one of my first in the exploration of the watercolor medium. I sent this image along with two other watercolor images of the Black Lab swimming and one oil of a chocolate wrapped up in a chair, to the jurors of The Art Show At the Dog Show in Kansas.

You never know what they will choose any given year, and this year they chose the oil of the chocolate Lab to be in the show. Of course I am honored and thrilled!!! Some of the very best dog artists in the country enter.

So..I am now offering this framed 20" x 16" framed watercolor to go happily to someones home. The image is 12" x 10". It has acid free mats and backing with a clear plexi glass frame.

Someone decided, between Palm Bay, Florida,U.S.A. and Shropshere,U.K. ,that they needed this painting more. It was taken from a heavy tube, covered with duct tape. The tube was re-wrapped and delivered empty.

Was it someone on the US side? The Uk side? I do not know.

The painting is signed so it can be Googled. If someone does this they will find me here.

I could only imagine someone thinking, Monet, Cezanne, to open and see a huge Chocolate Lab face staring at them. That made me chuckle, but then, did someone throw it away?

No no one would dare come near his sheep! But then again, he's a Lab. So instead of guarding he may be just hanging out with some new really furry, furry Labrador friends.

Roger is Lithuanian and has new Facebook friends there. And yes of course they have Labs. They also have sheep and goats that sit in their cars like our kids. Now that is a wonderful picture! They also have beautiful green fields. I asked if I could "steal" this reference photo and it was a yes!

"The Crack Of The Rifle"

I saw this photo of the two Labs in the Highlands and I had to paint it. They are in the Scotlland Highlands and the sound of the hunters rifle was heard. The two Labs snapped to attention!

Well it took me 4 tries to load the pictures on the correct way. LOL. I had this great 4, 4" x 4" mat and decided to do a series of our Sammy diving into the pool, getting the ball then coming out. An every day event here at our home.

I have so many "to-do's" on my plate but I'm taking a few days to play and work on this painting. ( I do have the to-do's in stages though). When I first saw the photo of these two Labs I had to paint it. They live in Scotland and do promo work for the Scotland Lab rescue. The hunters were out that day and at the crack of the rifle they both turned.

As the days go by I'll post the continuing process.

I studied drawing 24/7 when I attended art school so now I draw every line from sight. (Yes there are cheating techniques when in a hurry) but I tend to stay with what I know. You will see scrub marks where I changed a line or two or more. The yellow Lab just wants to take over the canvas. :-) I will glaze his color on after my base drys. Tomorrow I will start the black Lab highlights.

The size is 28" x 22" oil on stretched canvas. It will be for purchase when finished and half the price will go to the Scotland Lab Rescue.

I have been going through things in the garage studio, throwing out and moving important stuff into my new home studio. A box I had not opened since we moved here from N.H. in 1999, oh scary, I found this watercolor in a plastic bag safe and sound. I knew the box had mat board and pastel paper but this was a real find.

In 1989, I was recently separated and living close to the edge in a large house with my two children and a crazy dog ,Doogan. Each weekend we would have yard sales, well I had them, the kids were embarrassed.
The folding chairs looked like they were doing a dance so I took oodles of photos and started painting away. Oils, and this watercolor.

2011, my children are successful business people and I a thriving artist living the dream in a warmer climate. And Doogan, he's waiting for us at the Bridge along with our wonder cat then, Merlin. He really was magical.

This painting is on 140LB watercolor paper and the image measures 22" x 22" .(Notice I loved the square format even back then!) It will be matted with a 6" mat all around making the entire piece about 34" x 34"

Since I was on my own I painted it under my maiden name, Farrell. There are quite a few pieces out there that are Farrell's. It is signed and dated.

I've been painting black Labs all last week and thought...Hmmm..I may not have a yellow but someone else may!

So today I found a couple of fun frames that were nice and painted this Yellow Lab and Black Lab having fun in their element!!

The frame is a silver frame, hard to tell with this image and a grey mat that really enhances the painting. It measures 13.5" x 7.5" all over with the image being 9.5" x 3.5"

Well my knee surgery went well. It was a week ago today and I've spent the week in pain, icing, feeling better, painting, physical therapy, painting, less pain, and today , feeling so much better and on the way to walking without a limp. I'm finding my legs and thighs are getting into shape throughout all this so it's a positive experience. (if one has to have this experience)

I did two small watercolors yesterday. Turkey, Patriots football and painting..what more could I ask for.

The day Sammy's tennis ball sank in the pool I was lucky enough to have my camera and kept clicking away capturing his frustration but incredible determination.

This the first long piece dipicting part of his search.

It's 19.5" x 4.5 mixed media on 300lb Fabriano watercolor paper. I used not only watercolor, but gouache washes and watercolor pencil. The mat I will use will be off white with a 6.75" border all around. The entire piece will be 32" x 17". It will make an impressive piece!

This a 7" x 5" watercolor and gouache painting on 72lb watercolor paper. I found this really fun easel frame and put it in the mat and it makes a really great presentation.

The painting was taken from a picture I have of a little yellow Lab pup that was in training to be a guide dog for the blind. We would take our Labs there to swim where they were trained and there were wooden ducks in the pond. This liitle guy found the mud and made a friend of the duck decoy. "A Perfect Friend".

A long time friend, patron sent me a few photos of her Labs playing in the water. I was to do a graphite drawing for her but as I was looking at it and my journey into watercolors, I decided to surprise her with a watercolor instead.

I love how the piece came out and tommorrow when my watercolor paper is delivered I'm sure she wouldn't mind if I recreate the scene in some form. I believe it's a tad lighter but on my screen it seems dark.

I found some of my bottles of Dr. Ph.Martins watercolor that I used for illustration work. I found the color perfect for my underpainting washes enhancing the highlights on the Labs head and body.

The image size is 13" x 6 3/4" on 300lb Fabriano watercolor paper. I ordered standard size paper the other day which makes it more economical for framing, but I do love odd sizes. I will mat this as all my watercolors, with acid free off white matboard.

He swam and swam for a good half hour looking for that ball. I added the tennis ball to the piece . I just loved the expression on his face!

When someone heard the other day I was doing watercolors they said, "Wow, you do it all!"

I thought about the statement. While attending art school in Boston I studied watercolors as a tool for eventually going into the illustration field. As a class we would parade around Boston Gardens painting the Swan boats, the bridge, the sky line. People would stop to see what we were painting looking and squinting, asking.."where is that???" That usually had us now parading to Filene's basement for the sales or over to Charles Street to get donuts.

Oils I learned from doing.

The key to be a well rounded artist is drawing skills. The bones of all artwork. Drawing was an every day event at school. For the first year we did line and shading, ceramic casts, light and shadows. That was then added to all day figure drawing. I remember thinking we'd never learn color or painting but now I see the importance of "seeing" with the strength of knowing how to get a strong base drawing.

This watercolor with goauche is 8 3/8" x 8 3/8" on 300lb Fabriano watercolor paper.

I will be double matting it. There is such a light and liquid feeling to this painting.

So...the results of the MRI are...torn Meniscus and a tear in my ACL. I had been playing tooss with a football with my grandson so I guess you could say "football injury".

I have been doing alot of sitting with my leg up and watercolors have been a wonderful way to continue my artwork. I call it backwards thinking from oils. In painting with oil paint, you put your highlights on last. Not so with watercolor. You need to plan almost every move.

This piece is image size 14 1/2" x 7 1/2" on 300lb cold press watercolor paper by Fabriano. I will be matting it, maybe a double mat. It just brings the piece out so nicely. The finished size will be 20 x 13. If you would like me to frame it also I would be happy to do that just adding a bit extra for that.

PS, wanted to add the origianl has warmer tones. It's so difficult some times to get the correct color in photography. At least mine. :-) when I'm the photographer!

Some may already know this but a few months ago I did an amazing acrobat on my treadmill that has now shown itself again as a possible torn Meniscus. I have found it difficult to stand for periods of time and frustrated with not being able to create I started going back to watercolor for awhile til I find what's what. Tomorrow is the MRI reveal, so it will be surgery or sitting more til it heals.

This black Lab is watercolor with white acrylic highlights. Forgot to use that mastic!!

It's an ACEO trading card size, 3.5" x 2.5"on 140lb watercolor paper. It's #1 in the Series.

A year ago almost to the day, we had plans to go to Heart of Texas Labrador Retriever Rescue's Night of Giving in San Antonio, Tx. Tickets in hand, rooms ready. I started to paint the Luke, The Fairmount Hotels Matre' D.

Roger became ill and had stents implanted so all trips were off. The half painted image was shown and the owner of the hotel bid and won. Well life takes hold and the poor painting was put aside. Do I do this often? No I do not. Not really good for business.

The origianl image was obviously the yellow Lab and the background was roughly painted in with reds, and greens. There was a large barrel behind the head which I had planned to use as the dark against light area. Those are the rules.

Well, next weekend is the 2nd Annual Hot Lab Rescue Night of Giving in San Antonio. I picked up the paiece and started. The feeling had changed and what flowed onto the canvas amazed me.

I started to paint Luke laying in that texas heat. Light to dark, I could do that with the limited color I chose. In yellow Labs I use oranges, yellows, golds, and pinks with violet shadows. I just continued with these colors in the background and when I was finished I knew why the year was needed. A whole new style had emerged and I caught Luke laying in the heat perfectly!

I actually love this oil painting. I think the Fairmount Hotel will be too!!!

This is a sleepy Chocolate Lab! Afternoons are such a great time to use for naptime.

I absolutely love how this painting came out. Alot of love in it. Our Fergus is the model but the position was so typical of Labs. Legs drapping, arms and huge paws just near the edge. I just purchased 10, 9 x12 masonite boards and found them to be so fun to paint on. When the paint was semi-dry I used a "no see" color glaze over the entire piece. I chose a Cadmium orange and light yellow mixture to add highlights all over the painting.

To explain "no-see" color, I take the mixture of oil paint and alot of painting medium. I use Gamblins Neo-Meglip. I barely touch the brush to the paint then brush it lightly all over the piece. Sometimes an artist will do an entire painting in glazes as the old Masters did. It gives such illumination to the painting with the underpainting shining through.

I'm really pleased how this oil painting of a chocolate Lab sleeping came out today! It's our Fergus who turned 10 yesterday. Oh he still has oodles of energy in him, too much some days. He likes to take naps during the day so he can really go crazy diving into the pool when Dad comes home. Non-stop!

I think you all know the story of our Sammy eating a corn cob. If I hadn't been an artist and wasn't able to offer an incredible deal for a portrait to people, Sammy would have died.
So many people are in this financial positon that an emergency with their pet would just put them over the edge. So many have had to choose to give their pets to a rescue for treatment.

So. I thought, what if a vets office had some sort of fund to help those pets. With that in mind I'm starting the Sammy's Helping Emegency Fund and starting at our own Animal Medical Clinic here in Palm Bay, Fl!

This oil painting of a Lab having the time of his life jumping the waves is 10" x 8" on masonite panel.
30% of the proceeds will go to this fund. As time goes on we'll be doing 50% to 100% of the proceeds. Dr. Thompson at the clinic, and savior of Sammy, knows of this.

At some point I'd like to extend this to other Clinics and maybe recruit other artists to join in this venture.

He sits on top of the screened in pool enclosure and watchers the Labs swim. He's our cat, Blue Kitty Kitty. Blue likes Sophie but just tolerates Fergus and Sammy. Fergus more. Sammy is a prey driven, ball driven boy so Blue has learned finally not to scurry like a rodent. We have a had a few close calls but still at night, Fergus, Sammy and Blue are all in our bed together.

Celebrating Mercury In Retrograde During the Month of September

Mercury in Retrograde! Roger had been an astrology buff when we met so I learned alittle about the planets. This past month of August my studio computer died, my phone was shut off, the tv shut off, Missed communication and computer failures. I laughingly said."oh Mercury must be in retrograde" . Looking it up sure enough it was. Electronics, communications, all off.

The planet doesn't go backwards but appears to do that. It's an illusion. It's forever traveling forward. At one point it appears to even stand still. I immediately connected with this feeling and decided to Celebrate Mercury for the month of September!!

I was on the phone chatting with a friend and Sammy came in and laid down on the bed near my chair. I had to take a quick reference photo and paint him. All he was is paws!!

When I go to the beach to walk I collect shells or stones. Lately small sand colored stones have caught my eye and I fill my pockets with them. Thinking of all things to do with them I think..hmm, how could I wear them?? Taking Roger's Dremel I drilled a hole , and that in itself is a project, and had my neighbor show me some of her wire wrap jewelry.

I'm a visual learner and I thought..hey, I can do that. LOL...oh it's harder than it looked, as you see. Placing all the stones down Sophie will nose each one then chose. (Actually she wants to walk away with it) The design is done using Argentium Silver wire. It keeps it's shine, maybe rub it every so often. The whole piece is 2 3/4" and will sell for 12.00 plus 5.00 shipping in a small box. I will include an 18" black velvet cord.

My ultimate goal obviously is to become more skilled and incorporate Labs! Painted on or small actual paintings wrapped in silver.

Here in our County dogs are not allowed on the beach. Sophie would love it! We snuck her on when she was younger and she chased sea birds and got sick on salt water. It was a day to remember.

Monet in Rouen With A Lab -Redo of Black Lab

It was suggested to me that possibly Monet had a Lab with him at the Cathedral in Rouen. Of course then I had to paint it. The Lab was painted how I thought Monet would have done it, using the colors of his palette. Another challenge for me.

You can't believe how relaxing drawing is for me. I can sit in bed at night and draw for hours, comfy and cozy, Labs sleeping on my feet, cat on my pillow. This is the second in my Cow drawing series on Illustration board. 3.5 x 2.5 ACEO. Sprayed with fixative and a UV protectorant it would be fun to frame or to "Float" on an acid free mat then frame it.

I photographed this beauty out behind Target in a field. Florida is such a mix. New strip Malls with cow pastures out back...oh and maybe a snake and an alligator thrown in for fun.

Could I have Been Bonnard?

Could I have?? I know he painted one Lab in his piece, "The Red Checkered Tablecloth" . So, I decided to repaint my impression of "The Red Checkered Tablecloth" with two Labs and myself as the central figure. Pierrre was alittle more careful about his checks whereas I was ready to scream counting and getting the red pattern with blues and violets. So I will say mine area bit more Impressionistic!

Number 1 in the Series of Graphite ACEO's. It's nice after working in the studio all day to come out back and draw. We have an area that is covered by a Bougainvillea tree. Cool, shady and thankfully today breezy. The Labs join us, Roger is on his computer, so geeky, lol, and this is where we can work on a Sunday afternoon.

Really Large, Really Small

This one is really small. As you may know my Kickstarter Project for Backers ended and was

a success! I will be starting the 40" x 40" paintings and continue to write the book. Along with Commission work I decided to have some fun ,along with painting the Masters with Labs in them, drawing small ACEO renderings of cows. They will all be signed and numbered, one of a kind.

Painting With Pierre

So I spent the afternoon painting with Pierre Bonnard. This is "The Open Window" I found so many variations of color in the photos of this pice I went with what felt right. I was excited because it felt we were working together, Pierre and I, similar strokes and painting pure color for accent. When I got to when I'd paint the Lab I started with my way then stopped. How would Pierre have painted the Lab. So I used his colors, his style and this is how it turned out. I'm very pleased because that would have been his Lab on location with him. I'm sure the little cat is asking if there was some way of getting the Lab to jump out the window. :-)

This piece is painted in oils on 14" x 11" x 1" stretched canvas.
